[ the voice is that of a male teenager, American. it sounds... a little tired, but mostly kind of dead. somewhere under all of that, though, is a banked ember of anger. he's probably not even aware of it. ]I was wondering the other day: why do adults lie ( Read more... )

This is more than just a confusing time for you, Harry, isn't it?

[ an acrid note of wariness enters his voice. ]

I don't know what you mean.

Oh, let's not play that game. Bit trite, isn't it?

Is it him, Harry? Did your father disappoint you again?

[ it's troubling to be so transparent. ]

He — there's nothing to. Disappoint. I know what he is.

Maybe just because it hurts the other person less than the truth, sometimes. Depends on the lie.

You okay over there?

To protect. And that's what heroes do, isn't it? Protect people.

I'm Harry Osborn. I'm never okay, apparently in any universe ever. Cue My Chemical Romance.

Everyone can protect someone, I think. It's just easier for some of us to do it for more.

And, hey, a name's not a curse or anything. Whatever happened to them or...or with any other Osborn, for that matter, isn't your fault.

The other me who was here had a drug problem.

My dad is crazy. My dad who's here is crazy. I'm crazy. I'm just not a complete jerk.

I talked to my dad.

He makes me feel... like someone else.

I don't know, Abby. [Helpless little laugh.] I'm not very... not very put together, mentally.

[Concern is all over her face. She doesn't like it when people she likes are angry. This just reminds her of Heine.]

I do not know why people lie but I do not like it either. I do not think Heine has ever lied to me. I would know if he did. I am sorry someone lied to you Harry.

[Harry smiles to see her, though. He's wearing a nice black button-up shirt and he's sitting by the MAC's pool.]

How would you know? Is that just something you can do?

[She is maroon today! And she smiles back a bit.]

I am good at listening because I cannot talk. I know how people sound.

Do you have to know them pretty well first? Or could you tell if I was lying?

[His smile has a hint of teasing. The initial topic is not one he wishes to discuss with Nill, and this is more interesting anyway.]

[British accent. Also, she sounds kind of sad.]

Because it is a cold, hard world, no matter what they want us to believe.

It's cold and hard, so that's why they have to lie? Or they lie because they want us to believe otherwise?

sorcerously September 4 2010, 22:44:32 UTC
Both, I suppose. Sometimes, people lie for themselves, too. To make fictions that they can believe instead of facing the truth of things.

[Pause.]

You do what you can to go on.
