Okay. So, uhm, I realize that there's a lot of tension right now in the City, especially after the President's announcement. And I know that's on most of our minds right now. For the record, I'm going over there to help.

But! But okay, did anyone else watch the finals in the Scripps spelling bee tonight?!

[Charlie's just sorta blinking in confusion.]

Well, yeah. But...it's spelling. That's like being the best, I don't know, algebra...er? Algebraster? ...Is there a word for that?

They don't have algebra bees at all, I don't think. But it's not the same at all because with language, you get to learn about how words have changed and evolved, and how words have been passed through one language to another, and the way their meanings have slowly changed with time! You get to learn about things like why "y" is sometimes a vowel, but other times a consonant, and why a p and an h together are pronounced like an f! Oh, it's just wonderful! And in a bee, you're timed, and there are no second chances. You're either right, or your wrong, and it's just so wonderful when you're right!

[Charlie is looking at you like you just grew a second head.]

Yeah, but that's...I mean. It's just school stuff!

[ Mary Marvel is totally a word nerd.]

Oh, I suppose so, but so fascinating! And I mean, knowing where we come from helps us understand where we're going, right? And the way our language works says a lot about our culture!

[Charlie's just a video game nerd, sadly.]

I...guess. I mean, if that's your sort of thing. I've never really been all that worried about spelling and words and stuff, ya know? Except for using them, and sometimes kinda making them do stuff they aren't really supposed to.

Oh, haha, I know. I probably sound really silly, but here's the thing about words: once you know where they come from and how their meaning has changed, making them "do stuff they aren't supposed to" is easier than you'd expect. And you'd be surprised at how often words have obscure definitions!
