Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon.

Jul 22, 2013 05:39

So we is flying out of the friendly 8 isles and heading to what the Hawai'ians refer to as the 9th island......Las Vegas.
And one of the first views we get is on the strip of Excalibur, one of the resort hotels.

I think I'm feeling a little queasy after looking at those pics! Good call, Meerkat!

Hmm...your trip to the GrandC seems so much more...fulfilling than mine. While the views were stunning, the trip I took was rather controlled by the bus company that took me there. And I didn't get to see any museum like you did - just a tribal gift shop (our trip was to the portion owned by the indian res) filled with overpriced Native American chotchkes & no place to sit down. Did you guys do a tour? (I meant to ask you that yesterday, but I forgot.) Or did you rent a car and go there on your own?

And Bogdan is not nearly as bossy as he would have us believe. Shame, Bogdan, telling those stories about Manservant...erm...CCL.

He is idiot going on rides like that. What happen to poor meerkat if he fall off!
We had good GrandC trip. Driver leave us alone to do own thing for 3 hours. And museum of 'first mapping' of canyon was fascinating.
Psssssh! Me never been bossy, missy.

GrandC is an amazing place and makes you realise how young 'man' is in terms of the planet.

The Grand Canyon pics are spectacular - I'd love to go there to see and explore it a bit one day.

Those rides, on the other hand, look positively terrifying!!! No way would you get me up that tower, let alone on one of those rides!

Love that Heart Attack Grill! Honesty in advertising for once!

So in just over 10 days we saw the youngest land on Hawai'i with the lava flows and the oldest in the Grand Canyon. Bit special, that.

Definitely something indeed! While I've only seen photos and video, it would be quite something to actually stand at the edge of a place you can see so much of the Earth's history laid out in that manner - quite mind boggling, isn't it?

If you ever get back to Canada, and you're interested, I believe the oldest rock formations are found there near Quebec at around 3billion years I think, and the oldest rocks dated so far are zircons from Western Australia - dated at around 4.4billion years, I believe? One of the interesting things about them is that there's evidence from their composition that the Earth had surface water even at that young an age.

Puts our time here into perspective, doesn't it?

The canyon is so vast you can see the different age layers so clearly and to walk down in to the canyon you feel you are walking back through time.

Even though it's just a picture, looking at something that old is mind altering. Aren't we insignificant!

Bogdan, be very grateful you didn't have two embarrassing kids leaping out of the car on the roof of the Luxor car park singing "Viva Las Vegas" at the tops of their voices! :)
