quality of screen caps

Hi, I'm new! I love taking screen caps for icons, banners, or just for my own personal amusement --- I recently got a new computer and I was wondering if some of you could help me.

Is there any way of making sure that the picture is the sharpest and the brightest possible? Including monitor/control functions, etc? For soem reason, my DVDs look sort of fuzzy. I mean, I have a new LCD monitor, it shouldn't be going to crap already! I've had it for only like six months.

For instance, a screen cap from the movie Waiting:

To me, the colors look a little muted, the outlines a little fuzzy, the shadows a little grainy, and I suppose there's no way to fix the blurring motion that's happening with his hand?

Anyway, thanks!
