Oh yes, what a fun thing to talk about. A near-death experience, that's something you want to discuss with all your friends. I've told a few people, but something like this seems like a big deal (judging from the reactions I've gotten), so here goes.
About a week ago, on sunday, I was doing some yard work with my dad. It was about noon when I had started, and if you remember VERY hot outside. The sun was out in full force, and there was hardly a cloud in the sky. Borderline hazy, the sun burning every inch of your body, and the occasional breeze from heaven; you know how those days are. I had a decent breakfast around 9:30 or so, and was planning on lunch after I finished mulching a certain bed. Well it turns out that the area needed weeding and edging before I could lay down the mulch. Big deal. So I did the work, and then went to get the wheelbarrel to mulch.
I didn't have a watch on, so most of this is guessing with time, but I'm pretty sure it was around 1 when I started to lay down the mulch. It took 30-40 minutes, but by the end I was really hungry and beat at the same time. And here goes the worst decision I've ever made.
I went over to the pool, got a towel, and layed it on the grass. I was sweating a lot, and just wanted to catch my breath. So I layed down, on my back, and within a few minutes was sleeping. I was hungry, so I didn't want to sleep, but it just happened. Now i'm sure you know that when you're hungry, its hard to goto sleep, so you have nyquil or alcohol to get knocked out. Well I was really hungry, so falling asleep was slightly abnormal. I don't know what woke me up, but It seemed like a long time later. I'm pretty sure I was only asleep for about 30 - 45 minutes. When I woke up, I first didn't even open my eyes, I just kind of rolled around. Well I felt that my towel was completely soaked where I was laying on it. That kind of starlted me, because I usually don't sweat that much. Well the sun's right above me, so I can't really just open my eyes. I roll over and get on my knees so my head is facing the ground, and try to kind of look around. I feel like i'm getting that feeling where you get up too fast and can't see.... I have tunnel vision up the ass x 20. Well it doesn't go away. My vision is extremely darkened, blurred, and tunnel-ed. At this point I'm starting to freak out. I don't really remember what happened, so I start to think that someone knocked me out... or something like that. I try to get up from all 4s and just fall down. I couldn't stand up, so i'm laying / crawling around trying to get inside from the pool area. I'm not too sure what would have happened If I fell in the water, but I think that would have been my first possible death scenario. I'll talk about that later. So I'm basically stranded, and trying to call for someone to help me. I cannot yell or scream, the only thing I can manage to get out is a whisper / whimper. I was scared shitless. I'm laying there thinking "If I don't get some help right now, or I don't get better, I'm going to die." Thank god, my dad came around back to see If I had the pitchfork dealy. He sees me kind of crawling around, trying to talk, and very camly comes in and gets me. At that point I think he thought that I hit my head or something. Well he gets me inside, and I lay down on the couch. I try to drink water, but I spit it out at first. I start to cool down, and within about 10 minutes I finally get some water down. It settled in my stomach really quickly, and I couldn't drink any more of it without puking. I layed for awhile, trying to get un-dizzy, and come to. I was so out of it... It was really like being hit with a baseball head and knocked out. Well once I had the energy, I went up to my room and layed down. The blurry vision eased off but didn't really go away until 40 ish minutes afterwards.
Well I looked up the symptoms and obvioulsy, I was suffering from intense dehydration. Had my dad not come around back, I would have died, probably within an hour, due to the heat and lack of fluids in my body. First day of intense heat, first day getting used to it outside, and thats what happens when you're not careful. Teetering on life and death is very scary, and gives you more appreciation for what you tend to take for granted. I'm alright, but a little shaken up. And drinking lots of water.
The pool thing; had I fell into the pool, I might have not made it out. Unless the water instantly cooled and hydrated me enough to get back my energy, I would have drowned. Enough speculation, that's pretty scary too.
Drink lots of water.
