Sogar die Reisenden der Karawavenen, die Fawwas in Adschra auf seiner ersten und seiner zweiten Reise getroffen und ueber die er sich damals so gewundert hatte schienen ihm jetzt von ihrem Aussehen und ihrer Art her vertrauter, als diese bunt zusammengewuerfelten Menschenkinder, die traurig und still durch das Wadi schlichen. Die Arbeiter erinnerten ihn an Voegel, die sich von ihrem Schwarm geloest und verirrt hatten und nun nicht wussten, wo sie sich niederlassen oder wohin sie ihre Reise forsetzen sollten.
Gleich nach seiner Ankunft haette Fawwas fast kehrtgemacht.

Even the travelers in the Caravans, that Fawwas had met and so wondered about in Adschra on his first and second journey now seemed in their art and manner less foreign to him than these colorfully thrown together young people, who slunk, sad and still, through the oasis. The workers reminded him of birds, that had loosed themselves from their flock and gotten lost and did not know where they should land or where to continue their journey.
Fawwas would almost have turned back immediately after his arrival.

German sentences are such epics; the last English book I read goes like this:
