Last week we discussed
if/when we'd start going back to a hair salon for haircuts again. Our stylist had texted us they were open. But when we follwed up with her to inquire about her hours, she responded this morning that she's being fired-not-fired.
"Fired-not-fired" is my term for the situation. When the shop reopened she had concerns about the conditions of returning to work and wanted them adjusted. The boss responded by deeming her insufficiently committed to the business and has removed her from the schedule. She's not fired... but she's currently assigned to work zero hours per week.
I wonder if this shell game with her being fired-not-fired is related to the upcoming October 1 deadline built into the major stimulus bill the US government passed months ago. The $2 trillion CARES Act distributed half a trillion dollars to companies in exchange for, among other things, a requirement not to cut staff until October 1. With the end of that exclusion period only days away, major employers such as a few airlines are already pre-announcing tens of thousands of job cuts each.
Well, there's not much we can do individually about federal legislation or corporate America, but we do know darn well now
how to cut our own hair. Instead of us going out to the salon today I trimmed my own hair, and tomorrow I'll trim Hawk's.
