Lockdown Day 91: Haircuts All Around

Jun 15, 2020 13:16

Here we are on Day 91 of the lowdown. That's thirteen weeks. In business terms, an entire quarter.

While lockdown restrictions continue to loosen, one thing that hasn't opened back up (yet) in our area is hair salons. That's fine by me as 1) recent assessments published by health experts rank going to a hair salon as one of the more dangerous activities to engage in as we transition back to pre-pandemic patterns of commerce and travel, and 2) neither Hawk nor I particularly need a hair salon as we've been relatively content with do-it-ourselves-at-home results.

Speaking of cutting our own hair at home, it was time. After the successful clipper cut I gave Hawk three weeks ago she was ready for a trim. The half-inch cut she'd gotten had grown back out to five-eighths of an inch. On longer hair a difference of 1cm isn't noticeable, but on short hair it changes the character. Her hair went from standing straight up in a controlled way, to just barely starting to lay down. She preferred the shorter look, so off it went.

Getting an even cut with the clippers is challenging when you do it yourself. Hawk tried then asked me to help. I was able to make quick work of it. There was so much less to trim off than last time. That was Friday night.

Sunday I decided it was time for my own trim. I've been trimming my own hair once or twice a week for months now, though mostly just on the top and sides. Trimming the back is a lot more difficult! So I've let it get a lot longer back there. Sunday I decided it was time for a cut in the back. Holding the clippers hurts Hawk's arm because of the vibrations so I tried it myself.

Yeah, cutting the back of your hair is tough! I took several passes with clipper guards of different lengths. That got me to a result I was basically happy with. It's not salon quality, but it's good enough for now- especially as I care more about how people see my face than the back of my head. There was a missing link, though, with trimming the hairline above my collar. There's virtually no way to self-cut that. Hawk agreed to help using the light clippers. Again the result wasn't salon quality but it's good enough for now.
