Chilling in Irvine. Blast from the Past.

Irvine, CA - Mon, 16 Sep 2019, 9:30pm

This evening I'm chilling at an Embassy Suites hotel in Irvine, California. As I mentioned in my previous blog, traveling down to Southern California this afternoon means I'll arrive at my customer engagement tomorrow well-rested and without schedule risk.

Staying at an Embassy Suites hotel is a bit of a blast from the past. Years ago I stayed at this brand a lot on business. Understand there are two important things that differentiate Embassy Suites from the rest: One, they're an all-suites hotel. Two, they offer a reception with free booze in the evening, usually 5-7ish. The latter is why I used to stay here a lot. Especially because one of the primary account executives I worked with, "Karl", was basically a high-functioning alcoholic.

Karl loved to stay at Embassy Suites. At the evening receptions he'd knock back 6 or more drinks in two hours. Then we'd go out to dinner- or just stay in; Embassy Suites have full-service restaurants- and drink a lot more. 🍸🥴😵
I'll Drink to That! 🍻
I'll admit, getting free booze this evening was part of my motivation for choosing the Embassy Suites vs. other hotels nearby priced virtually the same. My choice to book a flight arriving at 5pm- rather than, say, 8pm- was, too. But I had no plan to slam down liquor like back in the day with my old colleague, Karl. My tastes in drink have evolved since then. Nowadays I'd rather enjoy two fine drinks and pay for them than get six crummy ones free.

Tonight it turns out I didn't have to choose free vs. fine. The hotel had a decent beer as one of its free choices. I drank a few pints of it while having dinner and working on material for my presentation tomorrow. That working dinner was also part of my plan for staying here & arriving early. Now I'm feeling much better prepared... and reasonably relaxed.

memory lane, taking it easy, planes trains and automobiles, booze
