Dinner & a Second Night at Hawk's Nest

Tionesta, CA - Sun, 1 Sep 2019, 10pm

We wrapped up a busy day in Lava Beds National Monument after hiking Captain Jack's Stronghold. By that point we were pretty sore- Hawk's fitbit says we walked more than 10 miles- and ready for dinner. We drove to the town of Tulelake again, same as last night. Hawk was ready for another platter of fajitas, and I was ready for one of my own.... But the Mexican restaurant was closed! As was the burgers-and-ice-cream stand. As was the whatever-it-was third restaurant in Tulelake. Everything was closed.

We briefly considered that all we might have available for dinner back at the Hawk's Nest was half a box of crackers and a few slices of cheese. Well, it wasn't quite that bad; we could have driven 30 miles in the opposite direction to Klamath Falls, Oregon, and there'd be plenty there. But better yet we remembered seeing a roadside restaurant about 5 miles south of Tulelake, in the direction of our inn. One website listed them as closed, another as open; we figured we'd try. And they were open!

After dinner we drove the rest of the way back to our cabin at the Hawk's Nest. We arrived around 8 as dusk was falling, similar to last night. Not similar to last night was my readiness for the... Spartan... facilities. I came back prepare for things like having a stained carpet, a small bed, and shared toilets and showers. For example, I took my shower this evening before it got too late and I was too tired to walk back and forth across the gravel parking area. And this evening the advertised wifi actually works! Now I'm catching up on touching up pictures for my blog (still behind!) and planning to turn in for the night soon.
