Several days ago I took the plunge and joined Twitter.
As in, I created an account.
...And started tweeting.
...Under my real name.
...Including about politics.
Yeah, I know, I'm only several years late to the Twitter party. One of the things that's held me back is my concern about public persona. Within my industry it's desirable to have a social media presence associated with one's real name. But using an account for professional advancement means that talking about anything personal risks harming the professional. I'd hate for someone to be thinking, "I totally want to hire a skilled DevOps professional, but there's no way I'm going to hire this guy because he tweeted he voted for X in the last election!"
Last week I decided to take the plunge anyway. I did that noticing that the CEO and founder of my current employer tweets on political topics occasionally (and his stance aligns reasonably well with mine) as do at least a few fellow employees and recognized leaders within my industry. All tweeting under real names. So if tweeting does hurt me professionally at some point... I'll be in good company? Yeah, that totally doesn't help me #SleepWellAtNight.
My handle is @_FirstLast. Replace "First" with my first name, "Last" with my last name. If you're interested in following me and don't know what those are, message me.
