A Tale of Two Houses

After dumping sand in our hotel this morning and then going on a hike in Red Rock Canyon and a second hike in Red Rock Canyon we drove over to the house we're going to be staying at in Las Vegas for the next four nights. Actually it's one of two houses we're going to be staying at. Our Darkfriends New Year group is big enough this year that we need two houses. There are about 18 people in the primary house and about 10 of us in the secondary house. We're sleeping in the secondary house, which is just for lodging. Most of the socialization is in the primary house. Yay, we get to commute.

We dropped our bags at the secondary house and looked around it a bit. Indoors it's kind of bland, a big one-floor house with 7 or 8 bedrooms that really puts the ramble in rambler because it's spread out so much that going from the living room back to the bedroom takes long enough that I keep asking myself whether it's worth making the trip. Out back there's a nice big in-ground pool and hot tub. I investigated the water heater a bit and think I set it properly to heat up the hot tub. It'll be nice taking a dip once it heats up. There's also a sand volleyball court in the back, though I don't expect any of us will be in the mood to use that. While the back yard has a lot of nice stuff it's surrounded by a cinder block wall that makes it feel more like a drug dealer's compound than a resort-y suburban house.

We spent most of the evening over at Party Central, another house in Vegas's expansive western side. It's a two-story mini-mansion done in a vaguely Mediterranean style. It looks like it was going for opulence but fell well short. Numerous halfway-done details and poorly designed bits (like internal windows) suggest that the person who built it started with a decent architect, fired him/her partway through or ran out of money, and left the rest of it up to the contractors to figure out.

At Party Central, or Main Mansion, we spent several hours hanging out, eating dinner, drinking, and generally catching up with one another. Many of these friends Hawk and I have not seen f2f in two years. For some, like Perke, it's been a lot longer. Normally our partying goes late but this evening it wound down around 10:30pm. Many of the folks had traveled in from the East Coast, and to them it was going on 2am. Hawk and I headed back to the secondary house, where I've stayed up for a while longer chatting with 1-2 friends in a quieter setting.
