Metallica on NPR? Live @ Wait Wait, part 2

Every program of Wait Wait Don't Tell Me! has a celebrity guest for the Not My Job segment. When we attended the live performance of the radio program in San Francisco on Friday, Aug 11 ( see previous blog) the special guest was Lars Ulrich, drummer and cofounder of the band Metallica.

Yes, Metallica on an NPR program. I think this is about as close as the two get.

Host Peter Sagal had fun interview Ulrich about his history personally and with the band. Two humorous anecdotes I recall from their exchange:

- Ulrich spoke about how he played tennis in school, in Denmark, and was nationally ranked. "Denmark's only about this big," Ulrich said, waving his hands about a foot apart (see above). "I was the 10th best tennis player in my age group in Denmark. When I moved to Los Angeles I found I was about the 10th best player on my block."

- Ulrich recounted how he chose the name Metallica for his band. An acquaintance in L.A. was starting a fan-zine for heavy metal music and was fretting over what to name it. He showed Ulrich his two ideas: Metallica, and Metalmania. "I knew right away that Metallica was an awesome name, so I told him to name his fan-zine Metalmania."
