It's Too Big!

Late last week I decided to upgrade my 24" external monitor to a 27" model. As I mentioned in my previous blog, I got the idea when I saw a 27-incher on sale at Costco. Well, I set it up Saturday, and... it's too big.

The 27" LED display fits on my desk. Physical space isn't really the issue. Though it does stand a tad too high. It would work better on a slightly lower desk designed for a computer keyboard, whereas my desk is designed for writing and sits a few inches higher. Really the problem is that it looks too big.

The proportions are off. When I look from my laptop display over to this monitor, it's like, "Whoaa!" And when I look back, it's like, "Whaaaa?" I didn't have this problem with the 24" model.

I decided to give it another day to see if the larger screen would grow on me. Or rather, shrink on me. ...Which, actually, it did. When I tried working with the monitor on Sunday morning its size seemed less out of place. But still it felt off. Too big.

I also noticed that the colors weren't desirable. Darks were too dark, and no amount of fiddling with the controls could brighten them up a bit without washing out the highlights. As much as anything else that decided it: the monitor would go back to Costco.

I made the return to Costco after lunch on Sunday. (Yeah, I wasn't going to eat lunch at Costco again after Friday's experience!) The line for returns snaked out the door. As I saw how long it was I thought seriously about just keeping the damn monitor. If my only objection had been its size I probably would have. But the colors issue sealed it. In addition to using the monitor for work at home I also will occasionally use it for editing large images, and for that bad colors are a nonstarter. Plus, the lines at Costco move fast. I was done in about 10 minutes. 10 long minutes waiting in line, but still just 10 minutes.

having nice things, costco
