A Disappointing Night in Kea’au. Reservations for the End of the World.

Big Island Travelog #3
Friday, 30 Dec 2016, 9am. Kea'au, Hawaii.

Our first 16 hours in this vacation rental house have not been good. I mentioned previously that the location is remote... that’s something I take part responsibility for as I could have vetted the choice harder when my travel companions told me to book it. But that’s only the start of what’s wrong.

Since last night we have found 3 roaches. Several of the electrical outlets in the kitchen don’t work. One of the lights blinks off when one of the other lights is turned on- making me suspect there are at least two wiring faults. Yesterday evening we opened the windows for several hours to air out the house as it was hot and stuffy inside. Though the windows all had screens (we checked them) the screens seems to have allowed mosquitos and possibly other biting bugs in the house. desdenova, Nicole, and I are bitten up.

If this were a hotel, we’d already be down at the front desk demanding a new room or checking out after 1 night. But since it’s a vacation rental our choices are more limited. Just now I’ve sent off a message to the owner explaining the problems experienced so far. I chose not to make a specific request yet; I’ll give him a chance to respond first and see what he does.

In more positive news, desdenova has been looking up options for New Year’s Eve events and has found that there’s a restaurant on the rim of Kilauea volcano in the park. What a great way to celebrate the end of the year- by watching what could also literally be the end of the world. Let’s hope we can get still get reservations.
