Those of you following my journals about Mexico have probably noticed that they're running a few days behind as I work to clean up my notes and combine them with the pictures I took. It's kind of like a tape delay with a sports game. But I'll interrupt this program with a real-time update that we're home now.
We left Cancun on Wednesday (12/31) and landed in Austin. We stayed in Austin for New Year's Eve, going out to dinner with an old friend and his fiancée and then hanging out together until after midnight. Thursday we came home to San Francisco. Today, Friday, was back to work for both of us. Though only for 1 day, obviously, since it's Friday.
One question that a lot of people ask is, "Why didn't you take Friday off and have 3 more days of vacation?" Well, a really simplistic answer is that I didn't have another day of time off available. Of course, I could have taken the time unpaid. My boss would've been okay with that, and I can afford it. But the main reason for coming back early is that both Hawk and I wanted to ease back in to our regular schedules. Today gave us a day to catch up on emails and simmering problems at work, and this weekend will give us a chance to catch up on chores and errands that we put off while we were on vacation and in the run-up to it. You've heard the common lament, "I need a day off to recover from my vacation"? Well, that's why we often end our vacations a bit early. So we can enjoy them and later get back to work without feeling stressed.
no rest for the wicked,
new year,
¡viva méxico!,
