This Fourth of July weekend we stayed home. That's unusual for us.... Almost always we've taken advantage of the day off from work to add an extra day or two along with the weekend and take a 4-5 day trip somewhere. We had travel plans this year, though. Keyword: had. This year
we canceled a planned trip to the Shasta-Trinity mountains in northern California due to the heat wave sweeping the state. With the extreme heat it wasn't the right time to do 4 days of strenuous hiking.
Instead of traveling and hiking in the mountains we stayed home and enjoyed the pool. We went out to the pool every afternoon. Even Friday, when I was working- I canceled the day of PTO since I wasn't traveling- I arranged my schedule so I could spend at least an hour in the afternoon at the pool.
How was it, lounging by the pool every afternoon? It was amazing. It was like a low-key vacation, but one where we didn't stay in a hotel or eat all our meals at restaurants because we had our regular bedroom and kitchen.
Thursday and Sunday we had friends over. That left Friday and Saturday as just-us days, which was perfectly fine.
And what about that heat? Well, it was hot here, too, though not as bad as further inland. We had high temps in the 90s Wednesday through Saturday. On Friday or Saturday (I forget which) it briefly touched 100. Sunday was cooler at "only" 90 as a high. It was splendid weather for relaxing in and around the pool for a few hours each day.
Would I do this again? Well, yes... but also no. 🤣
I don't like losing the extra day off that we could've gone traveling somewhere. Time off while we're working stiffs in Corporate America is a precious thing and mustn't be squandered. This once, it was understandable. Circumstances overwhelmed our plans. They not only overwhelmed Plan A but also Plans B, C, and D. We made the best of Plan E, staying home. But Plan E, staying home and enjoying the pool, is also something we're working on doing regularly throughout the summer. We don't need a holiday weekend to enjoy the pool. In fact last week we already did afternoons at the pool Mon-Tue-Wed and, after a skip day today, will likely do it every day this week, too. Summertime = Pool Life.
