Would you show a prospective employer your W2?

As many of you know, I am in the process of looking for another job. I am in the final stage of the interviewing process with two companies right now. I anticipate written offers very soon.

One of these prospective employers has asked me for my W2 from last year.

Here's the context as I understand it: At my previous job I was making significantly more than this employer planned to offer for this position. The hiring manager wants to offer me something closer to my past salary but is encountering push-back internally. My W2 will help him get approval from the other execs.

Although this explanation makes sense the request still strikes me as very unusual. I have never been asked to furnish W2s before, and no-one I've spoken to so far has heard of them being requested for salary negotiation purposes in the US. My initial reaction was, "This is a trust issue." As in, the employer is expressing distrust of my statement about what I made last year and expect to make in my next job.

Tell me what you think. Have you ever been asked to show your W2s as part of salary negotiation for a new job? If so, how did you respond? If not, how would you respond? I'm eager to collect input from others.
