Sometimes, life needs to be made harder

My friend soleta_nf just posted about an event that intrigues me, the National Novel Writing Month. The idea is that you write a 50,000-word novel during the month of November. To many people, this might seem a little insane, adding a project of that magnitude on top of my accounting class and baby preparations, but to someone who's done both the 3-Day Read more... )

When replying to your comment I tried to find a Q&A from the NaNo site for you, but they must have taken it out of this year's version of the web site. Too bad, because it was hilarious. I'll try to paraphrase and not butcher it too badly.

The question was: Have you heard of the people in Vancouver who do the three-day novel writing contest? What do you think of that? The answer: That's ridiculous. Everyone know that to write effective, beautiful prose you need at least a whole month. ;)

They do say at another point that they chose 50,000 words in a month b/c, though it's difficult, it's not impossible. If you look at their stats, something like 50,000 people participated last year and about 6,000 "won", meaning finished. Which makes "winning" a huge accomplishment in and of itself!

Oh yes, expecting good writing out of the 3-day novel contest is... well, let's just say that I really doubt that the winners actually write their novels in 3 days... lol

Agreed! That may have been thy jumping off point, but they did a lot of work on them afterward, too.
