How different are they, really, from sites like LiveJournal?

Different. LJ is for blogging. Facebook is more like a dating site, is like, not is. You have a profile page, and thats the main feature. You can search for other people and have them listed as friends. And you can join an 'area' to meet new people in your area

There are many sites like it, Bebo, WAYN, Myspace.

Myspace is quite cool I think. For keeping in touch with people away at university, and for finding new music, and for finding ancient school friends.

Everyone shud use myspace and nothing else, lol.

I do agree with you. Myspace profiles are exactly like you said, vanity projects, a place where people can come and waste time, feel cool, and not actually have to speak face-to-face to anyone, lol.

The people on the chase for a HUGE friends list are well sad. I always laugh when i find someone who has hundreds of listed friends.

i never really understood it myself...i have a friendster account from years ago that i never use or check...i tend to agree with you that interpersonal contact is best and if the "friendship" isn't worth that then it's likely not worth any effort...and i have this place to keep up with the people i know and don't see very often...
