Alec was more than asleep. He was that limp sort of sacked out that one usually only saw in house cats. The sort where they knew they were safe and didn't even twitch when you poked them.
The coffee table was littlered with roughly sketched comic book pages, his journal and the one he used just for the comic. A novel he'd snagged from on of House's bookshelves was flopped on the floor from where it had fallen from his hand.
Jinx sat in the kitchen doorway watching House work.
House was working quietly for a moment, before looking over at Jinx with a raised eyebrow and a sigh. He paused to scoop some of his meatballs out onto a plate from where they were cooking, and placing them down on the floor in front of the dog.
"You tell Wilson that I did this for you, and you sleep in the hallway. I don't care what he says." And by he, he meant Alec.
Jinx also probably knew that that was a pretty empty threat and House would sooner cave to Alec's kicked puppy face then stick to his guns, but that was neither here nor there.
Jinx nodded once. He wouldn't tell a soul. Then he settled to eat the meatballs. He didn't gulp them like a dog normally would though. He knew good food when he got it. Then he licked the plate to show appreciation.
House gave him a small smile in response and went back to his cooking, trying to focus on that, and not the kid sleeping on his couch. He couldn't help it though. His mind tended to work faster than it should, and he rarely ever could just focus on one thing at the time. Right now part of his attention was focused on worrying about the kid who seemed to have lost his family, and that was never a good thing.
Jinx gave a large satisfied yawn. He would say he was content with life. He wasn't. Dean was missing. Ben, while Jinx loved him, needed a good hard bite to the ass. Sam was layed up. Amy also needed a good hard bite.
And Alec? Well Jinx didn't have to be a genius to know that there was somrthing seriously wrong with his master. But at least he was sleeping now. Jinx would take what he could get. He settled on the floor to keep House company.
About an hour later, House was putting the food into tupperware containers for later, ready to get off his leg for a while. Once everything was away, cleaned up, and in the fridge, he moved in the direction of the piano, letting his fingers run over the keys for a moment, before he started to play, keeping it soft and low.
"I read a book once where the mom was a really good cook, but she cooked over a bunsen burner in her lab so every now and then accedents happend." Two-thirds of what Alec said lately seemed out of the blue.
"Science and cooking generally go hand in hand," House said with a nod. "If I were the kind of person to give other things credit, I would have said that that's the reason I'm as good at it as I am."
"And doctors used to have to use herbs as medicine. So, I bet they all used to be either great cooks or terrable once. Same with people that used folk magic." Stream of consioucness time.
House just nodded, continuing to play. He found it best that when Alec got into that frame of mind, he just let him talk it out until he was finished. Derailing him with a comment might make things worse.

House knew that feeling a little too well.

Eventually Alec woke but it was slowly. He was content to lay there quietly not thinking, just listening, while absently petting Jinx.
