CHAPTER 1

-.-.-.-

Sir Leon wiped his brow, took a deep breath and pushed open the large wooden doors that led into the grand hall.

Uther looked up from his documents with narrowed eyes.

“Sire,” Sir Leon bowed.

“Yes, I’m incredibly busy. What is it?” Uther snapped.

Sir Leon bowed even lower, for good measure. “Sire, the men have found something… unusual in the lower town.”

Uther dropped his gaze back to his papers. “Is that all?”

Sir Leon hesitantly straightened up hesitantly “We believe it may be an instrument of magic, Sire.”

Uther looked up, suddenly rapt with attention. “Magic? Bring it to me at once.”

Sir Leon sighed in relief, bowed and turned to leave.

“Oh and, Sir Leon?”

“Yes?” Sir Leon turned back to face the King with a feeling of dread in his stomach.

“Summon Gaius here, immediately.”

-.-.-.-

Martha was damp, and cold… and tied to a tree.

Not an enviable position to be in. Especially when her captor was unusually aloof and cryptic.

“Look, whoever you are you have to let me go, now!”

The blonde lady that held Martha captive simply ignored her pleas; she was busy gathering wood from the forest floor.

“I have a friend… he’ll kill you if he knows what you’ve done…” Martha struggled against the ropes that bound her.

“There’s no use struggling, Guinevere. You won’t get free.” Morgause turned to face Martha. “And as for that friend of yours, Arthur won’t be riding to your rescue, I’ve made sure of it.”

“Listen! There’s been a mistake. I’m not…”

“Rich? Influential?” Morgause smiled, “Oh but you will be. A friend of mine told me that.” She turned quickly from Martha, as if the conversation suddenly bored her.

Martha suddenly realised that if she admitted she wasn’t Guinevere after all, she would put not only herself in danger but also Gwen… she would just have to find a way to escape and warn The Doctor about this strange woman and her plans… whatever they were.

Just as Martha was wondering how best to pry some information out of her captor, Morgause held her hand out over the pile of wood she had collected and whispered “Fyeires”. Flames sprung suddenly from the pile of twigs.

Martha grinned suddenly. Magic? This she could deal with.

-.-.-.-.-

The Doctor tapped his hand against Gwen’s wooden table, frowning slightly.

“Wonder what Martha’s up to? She’s taking a while.” Gwen voiced The Doctor’s fears.

“I’ll just go check…” The Doctor stood up and strode purposefully towards the door, opening it swiftly and glancing left and right along the street. “Martha?” he called.

He walked along the road in the direction Merlin had taken, squinting through the light drizzle that had replaced the raging storm. “Martha?” he called again.

He came to sudden halt at an alleyway about 200 yards from Gwen’s house… and sniffed.

“What’s wrong?” Gwen had followed The Doctor down the street. “What can you smell?”

“An atmospheric disturbance of some kind…” The Doctor paused, kneeling down and picking up a single red thread from the muddy ground… “But that’s impossible!” he exclaimed suddenly, getting to his feet so rapidly that he nearly knocked over poor Gwen.

“What is it? Where’s Martha?” Gwen glanced up and down the alleyway.

The Doctor turned to face Gwen. “She’s been teleported… and I have no idea where she’s gone.”

-.-.-.-.-

With an unexpected wave of her hand, Morgause released the bonds that tied Martha to the tree.

“Come, Guinevere.” She smiled, a mysterious expression on her serious face. “Eat something.” She gestured to the food she had just conjured.

Martha was ravenous… her plan to escape could wait another few seconds… she just had to wait for the perfect moment.

Martha kneeled down on the cold ground, reaching for the food… but then something made her stop.

She gazed suspiciously at Morgause. “How do I know this isn’t poisoned?”

Morgause reached for a piece of bread and took a bite… she offered it to Martha, who gobbled the food down gratefully. Once she had finished, Martha stood suddenly, and pointed a finger at Morgause.

“Mmm,” Martha chewed on her last piece of bread, “Hang on.” She lowered her arm, finished swallowing and then raised her arm back and pointed again at Morgause.

She swished her hair back dramatically before declaring loudly. “I name thee… CARRIONITE!”

There was a pause where both women stayed perfectly still.

Nothing happened.

Morgause glanced around as if expecting there to be someone behind her that Martha had addressed, Martha looked down at her pointed finger as if it had failed her.

“Perhaps you should remain tied up, for your own safety…”

-.-.-.-.-

“Teleported?” Gwen raised her eyebrows.

The Doctor suddenly realised that Gwen probably wouldn’t understand the concept of teleportation.

“Err… look don’t worry. I can just follow the ion trail… I’ll need get back to my TARDIS though, it’s big blue box. I parked over by the square I think.” Comprehension dawned on Gwen’s face.

“A Blue Box?” she asked.

“Yup, that’s it.” The Doctor grinned, “Seen it around?”

“Merlin told me Arth…” Gwen looked flustered. “I mean… the Prince and his knights, took it up to the castle.”

“The castle?” The Doctor whirled around. “What do they want it there for?”

“Well presumably the King wants to check it.” Gwen seemed unperturbed.

“Check it? What for?” The Doctor crinkled his brow.

“Why, for magic of course.” Gwen said.

-.-.-.-.-

It took a team of ten knights to carry the box into the castle, but they had, at last succeeded.

Uther wasn’t impressed.

“A. Blue. Box?”

Gaius raised one worn-out eyebrow.

Merlin stifled a giggle.

Morgana blinked.

Arthur crossed his arms and frowned.

Sir Leon grimaced. “Yes, sire. Our whole battalion of knights attempted to penetrate it, with no success.”

There was no change Uther’s sceptical expression… Sir Leon tried again.

“Several villagers claimed to have witnessed it appear out of thin air sire… they reported hearing a strange, unearthly sound just before it was discovered. One woman says she saw two sorcerers leave the box.” Sir Leon said.

Uther turned to Gaius. “What do you make of this?”

“I will have to consult my books… but I personally have never heard of any enchantress or sorcerer possessing a Blue Box.” Gaius shrugged, stumped.

Uther barely paused for thought. “Very well… Destroy the box and find the sorcerers. Peace talks can wait, this must be our immediate priority.”

Gaius frowned.

Merlin bit his lip.

Morgana flinched.

Arthur nodded.

Sir Leon bowed. “Yes Sire, it will be done.”
