I've not done any cooking yet. So far I've been cleaning up rooms after the guests staying there have left. Perhaps I should ask if the manager if he would let me try cooking. Oh, but I don't know that my cooking is quite up to the standards of a professional, so I wonder if the guests here would actually like it.

When a cook is hired they are usually asked to prepare some food in order to show their capabilities... Maybe you can ask the manager and see if you can pass such a test?

If you do, you will have something else to do which you may enjoy more, and if you don't you can always ask for advice on how to improve your skills.
