Ever since middle school, on that first glorious mid afternoon when 6 of my closest friends (including my then idle Josh Perry) gathered at Tom Fertal's house i have been in love with the role playing genre. it was called Advanced Dungeons and Dragons and it has captured a part of me that i'll never get back, though i would never want it back even if i could. its name has changed over the years: final fantasy, D&D 3rd ed., Alternity, FF (again), kingdomheats, everquest, shadowrun, FF (once more), morrowind, EQ2, WoW; but it has always remained the same, at its core, for me. and now, there will be one more name change in store: Oblivion. for those of you not in the know, Oblivion is the 4th instalment of the elderscrolls series of games (the third being morrowind). the elder scrolls are notorious for creating that beautiful feeling of pure freeness. the concept alone is one that has dwarfed any electronic RPG, including the MMO's. the freedom of the game from charactor creation (no real classes unless you want a premade class) to storyline (about a dozen diferent major story lines, a couple thousand quests and infinate ways of playing the game) is just amazing. really, the only thing that comes close in scale is the original game itself (D&D) with a kick ass DM whos got his shit together and a group of solid friends. as a side not, morrowind is the only single player RPG that i never really felt alone while playing. but these days, its impossible to find a group. thats what i need, really. a good D&D group. but until then, the beauty that is oblivion will do nicely. not much longer till its release date now.
