People have been grappling with this question since time immemorial. It's easy to 'justify' when bad things happen to bad people. "Karma - what goes around comes around!" But how do you explain when tragic things happen to good people?
Nobody ever stops to think that good things happen to bad people.
And good things also happen to good people.
For some reason, people don't focus on that idea or hear/tell those stories. And even if we do, we don't feel the need to justify or come to terms with it. We don't know all the good things that has happened to that person. We just choose to focus on the negative.
I believe that bad things exist in the world to balance out the good and vice versa. No matter what we do, we will never get away from bad things happening just as we can never get away from good things happening. "For every action, there's an equal and opposite reaction."
But then how about when SO much bad happens to a particular person? One thing after another after another to the point that it seems like they just never get cut a break.
I've been stuck on this question for the past few weeks. All I've come up with is that there's no reason. Things just happen. What is important is how we react to it. And the reaction is what defines us.
