Because people like to feel superior?
Seriously, I agree with pretty much everything you said here. How are you advocating for an equal world if you won't let people live in ways that make them happy?
And more importantly, how can you (not you specifically - them) claim to be an activist when you don't want to recognize your privilege as someone with access to higher education?
