Just home from the St. Louis Symphony. Conductor, soloist, and (for the first piece) composer was Andre Previn. I have to say that it lived up to the hype. The concert opened with his piece, which made me think of Disneyland and 1950's version of futureland. I was surprised to learn that it was composed in 2000. Huh. Anyway, modern music that didn't make me want to leave. :p The second piece was a Mozart piano concerto. Previn is only four years younger than my dad, and he was still able to play it beautifully. I was really worried because he had one heck of a time making the step up to the conductor's podium at the start of the concert. And the concertmaster had to get up and hold his chair steady as he sat down (yep, he conducted from a seated position). He seemed so fragile that I didn't have high hopes. He blew that away and did a terrific job on the Mozart. No score, either.
The second half of the program was Romantic Rackmaninoff Symph. 3. Nice job, just not my thing. It was lovely to be there, though. That place really is a slice of heaven for me.
