The Tube is gorgeous isn't it? I kind of don't find that it pushy, but then I think the last time I was there I'd just been on the New York Subway and that was truly frightening in terms of pushing and shoving. I love the stairs too... and how far you have to go down sometimes... amazing isn't it? Some of those are, famously three quarters of a mile down! Ah yes, good shoes are a glorious thing when you're travelling, good you found something that worked for ya! But what can you do, we gots to walk
( ... )
I feel bad for the people in wheelchairs who can't use much of the Tube. It seems unfair. I know there are lines that are whellchair accessible, but it didn't look like much.
DH and I are going to NYC next week to see War Horse and are a bit apprehensive about using the NY Subway.
I suppose it's a matter of what you're used to. I'm used to the DC Metro so I'm not particularly bothered by the crowds. Granted, the trains are bigger and air conditioned and the stations are bigger and cleaner. (Getting caught with food or drink will get you a hefty fine.) I don't think I've ever been blocked outright trying to get off a train here.
When Metro trains are delayed here, the reason is usually because the trains are 'single tracking' between stations.
But I don't think my issue was a London thing. I think it was a country-mouse-going-into-the-city thing. Being in an urban environment, it's almost like you're pushed into 'tunnel vision' where you have your mental personal space when you can't have physical personal space.
Yay that you thought the V&A was brill!!! And I love how you made discovering Marks & Spencers sound like turning to the Dark Side. Ha ha ha! One where all your creature comforts are dealt with. :D Classic conversation you overheard - you can bet that they've told their mates about it too! You're a legend. ;)
M&S was magical. Like Disneyland, with awesome socks. Sometimes when I'm in Target (kind of like M&S) I wonder how long I could survive in the store if I got trapped inside. Months, I should think.
Classic tennage boy conversation for sure. But I was startled by how quick my head snapped around to look at them and I was just able to stop my mouth in time, thereby preventing what could have been an international incident.
