History: Wiki, Episode summaries

The last thing Hinata remembers before he wakes up was an accident involving a truck but as soon as he opens his eyes he finds himself in the campus of an unfamiliar school. He is immediately whisked off to class which he was supposedly part of and where everyone knew who he was. This causes him to run to the roof to gather his bearings and figure out just what's happening. Enter Yuri Nakamura who decides that pushing Hinata off the building was more than enough to teach the boy that death wasn't possible in this world.

After he comes to, Hinata is introduced to the concept of that world being the afterlife and that everyone had merely been models that he and other humans who had died should follow. That, and that there was a god ruling that world. From then on, the two began searching for God and ways to draw it out. This eventually led to the foundation of the SSS, making Hinata and Yuri the co-founders of the team.

Fastforward to the beginning of the anime. Hinata is introduced to Otonashi as one of the members of the SSS and the two become quick friends, despite the constant banter of one or the other being gay.

In episode 4, Yuri suggests that they all break off into teams and join in the baseball tournament being held in the school. Hinata and Otonashi join forces to form a team, only to end up with the remaining "idiots" of the SSS. Although the team wasn't exactly how he envisioned it, Hinata remains positive through out the game, making it all the way to the finals against Tenshi and the rest of the student council's team. During the last inning, he reveals a similar scenario that had occurred in his life to Otonashi. He had been part of the baseball team and they had made it all the way to the high school finals. With two outs, runners on both second and third bases, and only a point separating the two, the final moments of the game was crucial. An easy fly ball flies towards second, straight towards Hinata. However, he doesn't catch it, causing the team to lose the game.

The whole team accused him for their loss, even going on about how three years worth of hard work had gone down the drain because of him. Hinata couldn't even retaliate back to his team mates, instead choosing to sit quietly in the middle of the locker room. It's long after everyone has left when he finally gets up and changes back into his uniform. Just as he finishes, someone approaches him and offers him something to take his mind off the funk that he had fallen in. A shocked look crosses Hinata's face as he stared at the item in his hand. Although it is never said outright, it is implied that he was given drugs to curb his depression that day.

The whole scenario had been so similar to how it had been during his life that he began wondering whether he would pass on and finally leave the battlefront if he were to catch the ball this time. He is unsure whether or not he wanted to leave but that question is left unanswered when Yui tackles him to the ground as revenge for his earlier "manji holds", causing him miss the ball and for the team to lose against Tenshi's.

The SSS continue out with their operations, eventually bringing Tenshi down and stripping her off of her student council president position. They take care of Naoi and eventually both parties befriend the SSS. They even help save Tenshi, who had once been their enemy, from the doppelgangers made from the programming software in her room. Otonashi and Tenshi then begin to help the SSS members fulfill whatever regret the had in the past life and allow them to pass on.

During the tenth episode, Otonashi had helped Yui fulfill her last few regrets although upon hearing her last request, he is not able to grant it. Hinata, who had overheard the conversation regarding Yui's past, then steps in and says that he would be the one to marry her in their next life. He promises her that he would break every window with a baseball until he finally finds her and they would start their relationship from there on out. The promise goes on saying that he would take her mother's place in the duties necessary to care for Yui. Eventually, he would marry her despite her condition. He even goes to mention that had they met prior to death, they would've been happy together. With her last wish fulfilled Yui disappears much to Hinata's dismay. However, he reassures Otonashi that he had been all right and that his work on the battlefront was not over just yet.

A new enemy presents itself to the SSS in the form of shadows and while Hinata and the others try to hold them off, Yuri goes on to find the source of whatever had been bringing the shadows into that world. She eventually destroys the computer room that had was said to control the world they were in before passing out. She wakes up a few days later in the infirmary to be greeted by Otonashi, Kanade, Hinata and Naoi.

The remaining five hold a graduation for themselves as a way of saying that their work their was done. The all over one after the other, first with Naoi, then Yuri. Just when Hinata is about to take his leave, he slips a hand into his pocket and touches the ticket transporting him over to the zombie-ridden country of Malta.

Personality:

Hinata presents himself as an extremely easygoing guy. Out of all the members of the SSS, he is the first to accept and befriend Otonashi despite him being the new guy in the team. He is quick to trust, especially in a world such as one their are stuck in but as soon as he gets to know you more, he definitely becomes someone you can count on.

He is also considered as the comic relief as he is usually the butt of everyone's jokes and is a constant victim of Yuri's plans. When the team sabotaged Tenshi's exams, Hinata was used to make a diversion twice in the operation wherein his chair was rocketed to the ceiling while Takayama switched Tenshi's exam while no one was looking. Despite the complaints, he doesn't seem to think too much about it, probably having gotten used to how Yuri always handled things.

Even if Hinata takes the backseat during most of the briefing meetings, he's actually got a couple of good ideas. It had been him who came up with the plan to confront Tenshi about the god of that world when the team only consisted of him in Yuri in the beginning. However, because of the way he usually presents himself, not everyone believes that he is capable of such things.

Hinata is also very dependable, especially during the SSS operations. He cares about the rest of the team and is willing to bite the bullet and die for any of them should it help them progress closer to their goal. It may seem that he does this considering no one in the battlefront exactly "died", but when Tenshi attacked Yuri in the manga, he stepped in front of her, all the while thinking that he wanted to protect her even if it meant him having to die. He also proves to be a decent leader, especially during the baseball game. Even if the team didn't exactly respect him as a leader, they were able to progress further than any of the other SSS teams through his guidance and the rest of the team's effort.

Although he cares about his friends and comrades, he shows his affection towards his them in weird ways. With Otonashi, their closeness usually lead the two into making jokes about one or the other being gay - this usually goes against Hinata's favor. He and Naoi also constantly disagree on things but the eventually get to work things out, even if Hinata has to go through some minor hypnotism that leads him to believe that a clothespin in greater than his own existence. The relationship between himself and Yuri is also an odd one, considering how she openly mocks and picks on him. He suffers a lot of injury - sometimes minor (such as a slap to the face), other times serious (rocketing to the ceiling) - but he takes it all of it in anyway. Lastly, there's the relationship he has with Yui. Their friendship get off on a rocky start, with the two constantly bickering, and this continues to go on throughout most of the anime. Deep down he actually cares for Yui even going as far as saying that he would marry her to help her fulfill her last regret.

Powers and Abilities:

Despite the whole "being dead" problem, Hinata is a normal human being. In the battlefront, he couldn't die no matter what happens to him, but considering that it was only an effect of the place itself, he will be able to feel all pain and worse should he be hurt while fending off the zombies.

He plays baseball decently but that may not help him in zombie apocalypse. The only thing that would be of use from that skill is to be able to swing a bat effectively against the infected. Hinata also knows a number of choke holds and various wrestling moves, though that too may not exactly be a good idea against the undead. He can also wield a number of guns decently, whether it be a sidearm, machine gun or sniper rifle.

Starter Inventory: The clothes on his back, and his "diploma". The diploma is just a paper he and his friends made, so there's nothing to worry about that.

Anything else?: Hinata is just like the rest of the SSS gang. Even if he could function as a normal, living human being in the Battlefront, he's technically dead. Characters who may have supernatural powers may be able to pick that up.

Hinata clenched and unclenched his hands around the large stick he had found on his way into the building. It may not have been something he was used to when it came to combat but it would have to do for the time being.

His breaths came out deep and heavy as he leaned up against the wall of an abandoned room. It was the first time he actually had the chance to catch his breath since he got here, having run away from what looked to be zombies that roamed around the place. The first thing he had done was rummage through the room, looking for something worth keeping. A few pens had been lying around, a couple of papers in the drawers, a few paperclips - all nothing worth noting.

There hadn't been much time to process the whole situation when he hit the ground and arrived in wherever this was. The fall was enough to reminded him of the first time Yuri had kicked him off the building in the Battlefront. Back then he had thought that he was going to die from the fall itself. However this time, he knew that was going to be the least of his problems.

He had seen more than enough zombie movies in his life to know how this would play out. Guy gets bitten, guy bleeds out from that wound until he finally stops kicking, guy is reborn as the living dead and the cycle repeats. Easy enough to follow. One thing was for sure though and it was that he had never thought that he would actually get the chance to see something like this up close.

A snap outside of the room had jarred him back to reality. Since his arrival, he hadn't seen any other living person around (though when he really thought about it, he couldn't exactly be considered living either.) but that alone was enough to keep him on edge.

With his back still up against the wall, he inched himself closer to the door, just close enough for him to peek over the edge and see who or what had been coming.
The problem was it was too dark to make out anything, had there actually been something.

Hinata pulled himself back into the room and let out a deep exhale. "Never thought I'd be crazy enough to do this," he mumbled to himself, tightening his grip on the stick even more. With that, he rose to his feet and ran out the room, his weapon of choice poised and ready to do damage against whatever had been out there.
