Ennis had never been big on details. He'd been wearing the same jacket since 1962, his trailer was made in '71, and his brother got him his first cowboy hat when he entered high school just about a million years ago. He still wore it, sometimes. His truck was falling apart, its blue paint chipping in unattractive patterns over a rusty bed. In a lot of ways, the way Ennis lived was reminiscent of the man himself, his cool mask chipping over decades to reveal the soft soul beneath. He was a simple man who led a simple life in a simple place among other simple folk.
So maybe.. just maybe, change could be good. At least, a very little bit. He didn't seem to have a choice leastways, Fred seemed to have taken up residence in his life without Ennis so much as having a say in the matter. He reckoned that weren't all that surprising; Jack fucking Twist had wormed his way into Ennis' heart the same damn way, after all.
And Junior sure seemed to like the wizard. Ennis had felt a strange peace having the two of them meet - he always did regret Jack never sitting down with his girls. Sure they'd seen him here and there, but they was always sneaking off somewhere, determined to be nineteen again.
In fact, when he thought back on it... most of his life he'd been running away from Riverton without ever actually leaving. And to think, Fred had already changed all that, with promises of New York and London..
"The mos' travelin' I ever done's around a coffee pot lookin' fer the handle."
He chuckled under his breath at his own stupid joke, earning the looks of passers-by. He was more than used to being stared at 'round here. Some days he almost welcomed it despite his nature; blending in to his surroundings. Like a chameleon. He reckoned they must know by now.. queer Ennis, unremarkable and unremarried. That took the quickness out of his step right fast.
For the thousandth time since poor Jack Twist had died, he saw vividly the beating taking place behind his eyes. Weren't no fuckin' tire did him in. Lureen took Ennis for a fool. And Jack's old man were just like his, in the end.
The Weasleys weren't nothing like them. Any of this. They were from a different world. They was from England. It was exciting in a way Ennis hadn't ever dreamed.
But it also terrified him. Fred couldn't possibly know what he was getting into, here in Wyoming where things weren't safe for men like them. Maybe England were safe, but Ennis wouldn't be convinced. Ennis weren't never convinced. Except of one thing.
He were going to Hell. The details didn't matter.
