23. and 24. Old Wounds and Enemy of My Enemy by Christie Golden
I was looking for something mindless in the library and I decided to try a little Star Trek. I read a lot of TOS books but lost interest after a while. Tried these two (they represent two halves of one story), which are actually written with the Voyager cast. Boy were they awful. I’ve read stuff on ffdothell that was better than this. I’d even bet that the main OFC was a Mary Sue. I finished them in the hope that redemption would occur at some point. It didn’t.
24. The Big Picture by Ben Carson, M.D.
A nice read. Dr. Carson describes several of his cases, including the separation of two different sets of conjoined twins, but much of the book has to do with his philosophy of life. He is an intelligent and thoughtful man and doesn’t always have the ‘expected’ opinions.
25. Sacred Reading: The Ancient Art of Lectio Divina by Michael Casey
I thought this would be about the process of lectio divina but it was more about the theology and evolution of this form of reading sacred texts. I did get some pointers but much of it was interesting but not useful for a beginner.
26. and 27. The Brave and the Bold (Book 1 and 2) by Keith R. A. DeCandido
So why, if I hated #23 and 24 so much, did I pick up another Star Trek two-fer? I guess I’m a glutton for punishment. In this case, however, it wasn’t punishment at all. This story was great- beautifully intricate, perfectly balanced, no heavy handed fanfiction overload like the earlier two. These books weave a story line through all five Star Trek sagas (from Enterprise to Voyager) and you buy it all the way. You see the familiar characters through the eyes of minor characters at many points and it gives a whole new perspective.
