I totally get my sense of humor from my parents. One of my dad's jokes in his heavy Finnish accent during Langerado was: "They're like Red Hot Chili Peppers but very boring and ska punk. That's why they're only Pepper."
"So are we going to buy a new car?" asks my mom.
*pause* "Are you talking to me?" asks my dad.
In all seriousness my mom says in her heavy filipino accent, "No. I'm talking to this plant here. Maybe it'll buy me a car."
You know how I go on with long monologues about bands that I go see? I thought it was really funny when my dad started talking just like me in the car. Something like,
"The Freaking Hot reminds me of The White Stripes for some reason. Did you know that they used to only be a duo? The female sang and played the tambourine and the guy plays guitar and does backup vocals. Then at a bar one of their acquaintances just walked up to the house drumset and started playing with them. They were pretty angry at first but then the next day called him up to join the band. Oh that's probably why they sort of remind me of the White Stripes. They don't have a bass player. Something about too many band members limiting their creative freedom. The drummer is a really heavy drummer with lots of bass drum to compensate for their lack of bass and stubborness though. At least they don't have the problem of the bass and drummer not synchronizing properly. What an uneasy feeling.
Once at a bar in West Palm Beach Matt asked me why this one band made him feel uneasy. It was because the bass drum and the bass were more off than on and when I told him he said, 'Thanks you ruined it for me. Lets go somewhere else.' So then we saw this really good band called [insert band name with the word Seagulls in it] and they were really good. I found this really drunken guy carrying his drumsticks around the whole night and asked him if he was going to play and he turned out to be in this band. He was really honored that I had come all the way from Finland to see him play. The male guitarist was very drunk too and the two female band members (vocals and guitarist and bassist) had to keep it together.
They would start songs and the drummer would start drumming a different song off in his own world and wouldn't stop as much as they yelled at him so they'd just start playing the song he was playing. Then the guitarist kept playing his amazing riffs and solos over and over for like 3 minutes after the song was over and they finally went out to stop him. Even though they were totally out of it, they were VERY good musicians. Actually they reminded me of when I saw Morningwood open for The Sounds in Fort Lauderdale. Morningwood is basically the instrumentalists from Spacehog and a female vocalist. The female vocalist is really crazy. She wanted everyone to start clapping and then pointed at a guy in the back with a beer in his hand who wasn't clapping. She made a big deal and eventually just walked up to him and started slapping him in the face until he started clapping. Then she was like, 'Thank you very much! Now we can continue the song.' The guy's girlfriend was just laughing alongside the whole time. Did you know that..." And so on about Brazilian Girls, Yo La Tengo, The New Pornographers' keyboard player, and Austin City Limits.
Haha, it went on for a while and I was actually listening very intently the whole time, but I couldn't help but look out the car window to hide my smile.
