Her chest hurt as she heard the words spill from Shin'ichiro's mouth. Her eyes stung, her breathing was shallow, and she wanted to punch him for no good reason. She could feel the heat in her cheeks and it embarrassed her. It was too much, too fast, too confusing. Noe did the only thing she could think of. She ran.

She sits in the kitchen, hands shaking. She barely notices as Jun walks towards her, calling her name. Her palms are sweaty, her face is warm, her ears are burning and her chest feels as if it might explode. The symptoms have a name now. Love.
Noe is afraid. She is no longer the same person she was yesterday. She cannot even imagine looking Shin'ichiro in the face. The blood rushes to her cheeks immediately. Turning to Jun, she explains the changes, wanting to understand and yet knowing she'll never quite comprehend this amazing, agonizing feeling. Jun pulls her close, reassuring her, telling her everything will be okay, but his words have little comfort.

'I like Noe'
It's simple, direct. But to Noe, it means the world. It's proof that she's not alone, proof that Shin'ichiro may possible return these confusing, infuriating feelings. She stares at the message written in stones and two borrowed gloves and smiles. She no longer feels warm, but the ache in her chest remains and her eyes sting. Noe feels like crying. The tears of joy never fall.

Shin'ichiro envelops Hiromi and Noe's chest tightens in shock. Feelings she cannot name threaten to rise within her, but she holds her breath, wanting to believe it's not what she thinks it is.

It's hard to breath and Noe wonders how it is possible for something to hurt so much. She digs frantically into the snow, desperate to find her proof. The snow is deep and her hands are red and tingly. Blood runs down a finger, but she barely notices in her haste to find the message.

She watches Shin'ichiro and knows. Her heart pounds and her cheeks threaten to flush in anger. He hasn't done anything, but she can feel the difference. It hurts. She wants to cry, she wants to yell at him, but instead she reaches out and pokes him in the nose. He flinches in pain and she wonders if he feels even a fraction of the pain her heart.
Shin'ichiro looks into her eyes, confusion in his gaze. Noe doesn't explain, she doesn't even think she could if he asked. In her own way, she forgives him, knowing that it wasn't meant to be. She watches him, wishing things could be different, wishing she had never discovered this feeling of love.
She smiles, running off before he can stop her. Things will be better this way. Her eyes sting and her chest throbs painfully, but she does not cry. She cannot cry. Her tears disappeared long ago.
