Waking up with a pounding headache was never a great way to start the day. Sitting up with a groan, Hitsugaya met the worried face of his vice captain. The events of the past few days came rushing back to him and he fell back to the cot, body protesting the sudden movement. Glancing at Rangiku, he prepared himself to ask the question that was on the tip of his tongue. Before the words even left his mouth, she slowly shook her head, eyes downcast. Hitsugaya nodded in understanding. Hinamori had not woken up.
As Rangiku began to offer an explanation of his injuries, the image of Hinamori’s frail body surrounded by so much blood filled his mind. He could feel his hands begin to grip the sheet as he thought of just how much blood had been spilled. Angry over finding Hinamori in such a state, he had lost his head, rushing into a fight which ended faster than it had begun.
Blinking as silence enveloped the room, he noticed that Rangiku had stopped her random chatter and was instead glaring at him. He ignored the look, slowly raising himself from the cot and standing. Wobbling slightly, he waved off Rangiku’s offer of help. After nearly falling to the floor, he sighed and leaned against her, warning her that this incident was never to leave their company. Quietly, the pair made their way to Hinamori’s room, Hitsugaya steadily ignoring the looks he received from the members of the fourth division.
The room was sterile, the silence overwhelming. Taking a seat next to Hinamori’s side, Hitsugaya barely noticed as Rangiku left the room. The sight of the pale body lying on the bed chilled him. He watched her, eyes searching for any sign that would indicate she was aware of her surroundings.
For hours, Hitsugaya watched over her, anger filling him as time passed and nothing changed. Exhaustion was beginning to take its toll, but still he refused to leave her side. His mind screamed at him to shake her until she woke up and faced what had happened but he knew better. Hinamori would have to wake up on her own. And he would stay by her side until that moment.
