Open forum on what to do about the Canadian Military

Personally, after years of reading news stories about Sea King crashes (though they have finally been replaced last year), peacekeepers being sent off to conflict regions with a shortage of basic equipment, submarine malfunctions, forest camouflage in desert regions and the whole disturbing fact that most of what the military use seem to be second hand from other countries and really, really old, I think it's time we increase the military budget.

The question is, how much? Where do we increase the budget and how much there? I don't think our country needs nukes, but things that the soldiers use on a day to day basis be it for training, patrol, various missions, such as what they drive, and what they carry and wear, definitely could use more money.

How bad is the situation? Would especially someone in the military or who is a family or friend, please speak up? Know of any recent accidents? Other than money on equipment, what about training? Did any accident happen because soldiers weren't given adequate training on certain tasks?

What can the average citizen do? Is it simply write our politicians (leaders of our ridings?), or do we actually have to raise a fuss and march or something? People like Rick Mercer have begin to draw attention to the situation repeatedly, his show is where I found out about the uniforms. What more is needed to get the attention of the politician, the ones who set the budget and the ones who can speak to the ones who set the budget.

What should the military be doing? Canada is at peacetime right now, so for those who want to be doing something, peacekeeping for UN seems like a good idea. What does people in the military think about peacekeeping? How prepared are the Canadian army right now for that?
