Unfortuantely I didn't catch the name, but looking back on the CBC website now I think it was Mac Harb.
The guy they had on afterward (another Liberal) was great. I especially loved where he pointed out that the EU is planning a seal cull. So its okay to kill them, but not to sell them afterward.
Notably, PETA doesn't have a problem with that either.
Probably a poll. It wouldn't surprise me, when you get down to it, if you ask in a poll people will support or oppose all kinds of things for no particular reason.
(We had a poll here in NB that I was called for. The results showed that a large majority supported the government's self sufficiency plan. A large majority also answered that they had never read any of it, but that part was glossed over.
I mentioned I was called for that one because the questions first asked if you'd read it/heard about it/heard of it/not heard of it, then asked if you agreed or disagreed with its recommendations. "I haven't read it and thus have no idea what the recommendations are" was not an available option, despite my arguing with the pollster that asking the question right after learning I knew nothing other then the title made no sense.
You'd be amazed how often poll results wind up just like that.)
I'm with northern_dirt - I'd like some numbers to back up that assertion.
Conversely, the fact that something is popular (or unpopular) does not make it right. Senator Harb needs to do more then tell us it's popular - he needs to tell us why it's a good idea.
I view the seal hunt as a necessary unpleasantness. The simple fact is that the only thing controlling seal populations is the hunt. Without it, you'll get a Malthusian collapse of their population (as well as the population of what they eat).
Besides which, we butcher lots of animals, not just seals. I like my cheeseburgers so I am in no way morally superior to someone who wears a fur coat.
Since when do senators need numbers? It's not like he has to face an election here. :P
I agree with you. On the whole, the oil sands aren't very popular either. But we don't decide what people are allowed to do for a living based on what mood the public is in today.
The seal hunt isn't a lot different then other commercial meat industries, and it's a hell of a lot better then the EU's seal cull. What do we gain by killing them and then letting the meat and pelts go to waste? That's just idiotic.
Like what? Most of what I said is repeating what he said on TV. Since CBC didn't put that interview up on their video site, it's pretty hard to link to it.
IFAW has no cred whatsoever. A few years back the Evening Telegram did an in-depth study into IFAW and its fundraising tactics - they're way more dependent on the seal hunt than are any Atlantic Canadian seal hunters. If the seal hunt was actually banned, IFAW's fundraising would dry up in a hurry - they need those cute little seals to be in constant peril in order to ensure the money keeps rolling in.

I notice the senator's not the only one failing to back up his assertions with a stat or three, tridus.
