Kevin Newman on Global currently pulls in an average of one million viewers. Lloyd Robertson is closely behind with an average of 950,000 viewers. I cannot find what viewership Peter Mansbridge pulls in but I would think it's right up there. But the sad note is Ian Hanomansing who has CanadaNow pulling in an average of 450,000 viewers. Well not any more. As of Monday he's guarantees no viewers as he's off the air. No doubt union rules will continue to have him pulling in a paycheque at your expense.
I actually liked Ian but his nation wide Vancouver based show stunk of it's locality. I think that was the problem. We knew it was Vancouver and they didn't hide the fact. While I know Newman, Robertson and Mansbridge are all in Toronto, I never get the feeling they're doing a regional show. Hanomansing's hair shines like he had to walk from a black Mercedes through the CBC's open air parking lot in the rain to get to the newsdesk. My opinion anyways.
For a tax supported entity, CBC seems to put a lot of emphasis on the news. There was Hanomansing as well as Mansbridge either doing the National or OneOnOne. Then there's George Strombolopolous (I didn't even check the spelling!) TheHour, Rick Mercer's Monday report and Air Farce and doing the news in a light hearted comical way. Then there's HockeyNightInCanada which is the news from a sports angle. Not to mention curling or CFL. No wonder they have Newsworld as a back up channel. Mothercorp is not only molding our minds with opinions and viewpoints, it's darn successful at it. All except CanadaNow.
So good bye Canada Now. I guess we're supposed to be getting an hour of local news programming now. Great. Traffic and weather reports after I'm home and warm. Great. I'ld rather we got reruns of the FreshPrinceOfBelAir like we did befor CanadaNow took to the air. Oh well.
