Apart from the expected "yet another leader from Quebec" comments aimed at Stéphane Dion, the issue of dual citizenship has been raised.
Dion holds both Canadian and French citizenship. I just found official confirmation of this after posting. It's been mentioned repeatedly on Quebec discussion boards for the past few days, and yesterday, Ezra Levant of the Western Standard wrote a column in the
Calgary Sun raising the same issue.
You may recall that Michaëlle Jean was forced to give up her French citizenship when she became Governor General because it became a major issue for many - divided loyalties and all that. If it is true that Dion has dual citizenship, should he be forced to give up his French citizenship now that he is leader of a federal party? If he becomes PM?
In Dion's case, his mother was French and passed on dual citizenship to the kids. According to his staff, Dion does not have a French passport.
