Hello, I'm a voting Liberal, I believe in peace, healthcare, maintaining a good environment, education and social programs as a long term solution to crime problems, rainbows, and also, butterflies.
I'm a new democrat, and to a certain level, I'm pro-gun.
Here's where I'm conflicted, and have no idea how the legislation should be.
Cities, and guns, make a very bad mix. There is no, rational or legitimate use for a gun, within city limits. (I don't like police, but let's ignore that, because you'll miss my main point)
The thing is, canada, is a MASSIVE country. you can't imagine how big it is. There are places that are so remote, that if you don't have a gun, you could run the very real risk of starving to death, or getting attacked by something nasty.
So, this, creates a pretty big problem. As Firearms are controlled by the federal government, we have the same laws in downtown toronto, as we do on baffin island.
So, I guess I'm pro-gun in a sense. Maybe that would be better described as saying I'm "pro hunter", because I think that it the gun laws should be tighter in urban areas, but looser in rural areas (where hunting takes place).
I'm very far from being a Liberal but I am against gun control. Not the same as being "pro-firearm", exactly, but I think we're probably on the same page.
I am also solidly in the anti-massacre camp. Having guns and using them to kill random strangers are two different animals.
There have been axe murders in the past, too... should we register axes as well?

It's quite a good defense of, well, what the title indicates. It's reprinted in "Ethics in Practice", 3rd edition, Blackwell.
