Voter turnout sucks, we all know that. Spoke with a friend about it and she told me she just wasn't informed enough to vote, so she wouldn't. That made me sad.
From previous posts, I get the feeling that an uneducated vote could distort things and if someone is not up to date on politics, they shouldn't vote. I think they should. I think everyone votes for their own reasons.
If a person only cares about one issue (lets say health care) and decides to ignore the rest of a party's platform, who cares? If health care is the most important thing in their life, they should vote. They do have the right to vote, but rarely bother, and I think part of that is because they don't feel educated enough or involved in politics.
If you're a card-carrying member of a political party, you're not really voting based on all the evidence either. NDP members vote NDP, Liberal members vote Liberal. I've made the argument before that you could run a block of cheese in some places and still garner a % of the vote because party members vote for their own damn parties consistently. How is that any different than a thousand uneducated people getting suckered into voting for a party based on misleading commercials?
What I'm trying to say is that it's important to encourage every Canadian to go out and vote this upcoming election. Even if they don't know the Liberals from the Bloc Quebecois. Only through participation can we hope to enlighten people and get them interested in politics again.
I guess if you're a member here, you have some interest in politics. So encourage everyone to get out and vote, no matter how clueless they may be.
