So wow.

I really don't have anything new to add about Heath Ledger. I just feel I need to acknowledge it. Besides, most people have better expressed how I felt upon hearing the news: shock, unbelievable and utterly surprising and unexplanable shock. It is incredibly, terribly sad.

I was so excited to see The Dark Knight. I'd watched the trailer and I was ( Read more... )

I am so glad that everyone came around. I know a lot of people thought that Heath Ledger wouldn't work, and I ran around assuring everyone for months and months that it would. A lot of people told me that I was just saying that because I thought he was attractive, but I had to assure them that maybe I did think he was quite a looker, and he was, but that only meant that I'd been watching his movies for years and I'd seen most of them and knew he was talented and that he could play any part he wanted, and that he would neither get himself in over his head in his acting, because when has he ever pulled off a bad performance? The answer is never, because though I think he pushed himself to do better with each new role, I don't think he ever tried to go too far. And so he progressed and expanded, and instead of being terrible and terrible until he was good, he just climbed the ladder. 10 years ago he was good at playing the light-hearted love interest, but today he's good at anything, at the confused and lonely ranch hand or the sometimes-jaded one-fifth of Bob Dylan, two parts that are not exactly something just anybody could pull off without looking like an idiot. But he has always been amazing, and has never disappointed me, and so how could he possibly disappoint in a movie that was destined for greatness anyway? It just isn't possible. I LOVE Batman, he's been my favorite since childhood, and I can tell you that I've never had a soft spot in my heart for the Joker like others have (my favorite has always been Catwoman). This isn't to say I hated the character, I just never felt very strongly about him either way. With Heath Ledger's presence, for the first time I cared and was intrigued because I knew that they were going to be doing something unexpected, because casting Heath Ledger, although he is always good, in a role like that is a risk. But I know it will be beautiful, and everybody finally came around when they saw that preview. We all knew then and we know now, and it's a damn fine way to say goodbye.

I was surprised to hear he was part of the Bob Dylan biopic -- I'd heard about it, but his name hadn't popped up.

You've captured a lot of what I've been thinking these past few days. He really was an actor who had come into a wider range of skill, and I think that it would have only kept growing.

It still strikes me as totally unbelievable, like this shouldn't have happened, and that I shouldn't have to believe it.

I agree. As upset as it makes me, I still keep expecting him to pop up from behind a house plant and yell, "Ha ha! The reason the autopsy is inconclusive is because it's an android who looks exactly like me, and he doesn't have real human organs because he's only a robot!" I'm still pretty convinced that this is what's gonna happen.
