Island of Dr. Moreau (Novel) question.

This might be a stretch but does anybody know where the Island of Dr. Moreau was located? The book gives coordinates for where Prendick was lost and later picked up and at the end of the book, he says he was retrieved by a ship going between Apia and San Francisco. A quick Wikipedia search says that Apia is located near Samoa and a check of the coordinates showed a location in the Pacific near South America but I'm wondering if anybody knows something a little more concrete?

I'd prefer a source from the novel itself, but I'll take movie information if needs be.
