Happy Birthday to me, Happy Birthday to me...

Really did have a good birthday. Stacey popped in yesterday to tell me my present from them is a year's subscription to Fashion Quarterly. I also got two of the latest Trinny and Susannah books. I'm starting to worry that people think I'm shallow...

One of my favourite presents was a blue rubber glove from Liz the friendly nurse aid. She'd blown it up, tied the fingers together in pairs to make four little legs and tied curly pink gift ribbon on the knot for hair. The thumb became a nose and she'd drawn on big eyes and a mouth and a "Happy Birthday Anna". I'll have to remember to ask Sam to take a photo of it before it goes too manky. It's very cute!

Bill the Consultant came round in the morning and told me that he felt so bad about me not being able to go to our chosen restaurant for dinner, he'd been in and told them my "sob-story", and they had agreed to give me either a free entree or dessert, or if I would prefer a main, he thought the ward probably had some kind of "slush-fund" to subsidise that. He gave me a menu, with the things I wasn't allowed helpfully crossed out (seafood, wines, and so on), and said he'd be back later to see what I wanted so he could ring them and make the arrangements.

(I can't tell you which restaurant because I don't want them inundated with people after freebies.)

So he popped back later, and as well as taking my order for a couple of desserts, he thanked me for being stuck here, as it meant he was able to take the table we'd had to cancel! There's cheek for you... but I have to say he'd earned it. So the menu for my birthday dinner:

Drinks - bottled lemon lime and bitters and ginger beer, supplied by Mum.
Anti-pasto - olives, feta, crackers etc - supplied by Mum.
Steak and chips for five - supplied by the pub over the road and fetched by Sam.
    Salad - supplied by Mum.
Falafels (for vego sister-in-law) and stir-fry vegetables - cooked in an electric frypan in the corner of the Ante-Natal lounge by Mum.
Two divine desserts - supplied by aforementioned unnamed but superb restaurant, fetched and reheated by Sam, and shared around.
Ice-cream, soy ice-cream, melon, pineapple, strawberries and chocolate cake - supplied by Mum.

I wasn't allowed candles because apparently there are oxygen pipes through the walls. Could have been a little too dramatic.

After dinner Sam and I took the cake up the ward and offered some to everyone. Oddly enough the pregnant women weren't interested but a few of the new mothers took a slice. (Breastfeeding is when you're really eating for two.) There was so much left over that we took it into the staff lounge for them all to eat when they got out of theatre and through the night shift.

The balloons and Happy Birthday banners are still up in the lounge.

The only thing that really could have improved the day would have been a more exciting end to the series by the Black Caps. A rained-out win on the Duckworth-Lewis system is kind of the opposite of riveting really.

As for this evening, I've just finished watching four episodes in a row of Red Dwarf so if you notice any Rimmer- or Lister-isms, please forgive me. I'm thinking in Lister's accent. And blame Kate for lending them to me!
