Heehee, as I recently mentioned, I finally played a mini concert at an open mic night for "underdog instruments". Here is a picture my friend snapped on his camera, it's a bit blurry...
It's the first time I've played the cimbalom outside the house, though I've played other instruments lots of times over the years.. I think mine was the most unusual (and frankly, impractical) instrument there, as most of the others were banjos, accordions and ukuleles.
It went ok overall, as i played a klezmer doina and hora in the first set, as well as a hungarian verbunk dance. In the second set, after most people had left, I played a yiddish folksong (papir iz dokh vays) and a klezmer tune (der shtiller bulgar).
The main bother was actually getting it to the venue, which is only about 10 blocks from my house. I didn't mind taking a cab, but i needed to get someone strong enough to help me move it in and out of my apartment. My friend Ben thankfully helped me do it at the last minute but admitted that he didn't want to stay out late. Eventually the sound guy from the event overheard my troubles and kindly offered to drive me home in his van and help me move it in.
Ahhh, one of the drawbacks of having a circle of friends that doesn't include enough beefcake truck drivers...
