The unicorns were the worst, thought Bow Tie grimly. The pegasus ponies were bad, since they could fly over the battlements, but at least you could spot them coming a mile off. They wobbled in the air, as if they could barely stay aloft, the way earth ponies couldn't quite walk right when they came back, and instead could only stagger and shamble. But the unicorns--the unicorns could still--
"Bow Tie!" bellowed a voice. "Behind you!"
She had no time even to pivot before a body slammed into hers, shoving her out of the way--bright white, and she caught a flash of autumn leaves whirling as Gusty pivoted, horn lowered, to charge at the zombie unicorn that lurched at her in return.
Stumbling over her own hooves, Bow Tie scrambled away from them, into the courtyard. It was a minute before she recovered enough of her wits to rear and call for help, but the winged guard had heard Gusty's shout and were already diving from the castle towers, long flaming torches clenched between their teeth.
Bow Tie shuddered. There'd been no one behind her, no steps on the pink flagstones but hers. The unicorns could still wink in and out, that was the worst of it. Their control was shaky, no match for a living unicorn's--she saw Gusty circle and feint, circle and feint, then vanish and reappear behind the zombie's muddy rump--and bless the mud, because without the mud they would all know beyond a shadow of a doubt that the thing trying to bite Gusty had been Buttons, before.
Even inside Dream Castle, no one was safe.
