Brrrr!

Dec 01, 2010 10:36

I've been here for almost 10 years and I've never felt this cold, EVER.

Ok maybe in the beginning, but by then I was already shivering when it was still 16 degrees. :P

It's not terribly cold but it's the wind that does it. Good thing my buses were on time this morning, I hope I will be lucky too on the way home!

I didn't find it all that cold when I went to work this morning on bicycle.
But maybe the wind wasn't that hard by then. I think the wind has increasing since then, and that makes it much colder.

Maybe you had some backwind?

The worst is when it blows straight in your face. My mouth goes all numb in no time, and I talk as if I had drank a bottle of tequila on my own LOL.

Yesterday around 5pm on the way back home I was crossing the square in front of Amsterdam CS towards the busses and oh my gosh the wind that blew then was freezing my nose and ears on the spot!! But back home in our own neighborhood, where the streets are much more sheltered, it didn't feel that cold at all. Odd what a difference strong winds can make! They said that today it would be around -6 but the wind makes it feel like -15 orso. I don't need to go out today luckily but I felt sorry for S. who had to go out at 6 and drive his scooter to work brrrr. On these cold days it might be better to bike then to scooter - except that on a bike it would take him way to long to get there.. but at least you're doing something and keep yourself warm some, I think.

You go by bus when tis this cold weather, rather then by bike? Can't blame you!! :)

Yeah, I've apparently turned into a softy since coming to live here. I had weather like this in America but the houses are better insulated maybe but it feels warmer at least. I was freezing last night, I even wore socks to bed and I never do that, lol.

Today was terrible. I had planned to take the bus to the station since the other day the bicycle roads were still covered in ice, but this morning I looked out of the window and thought: "Well, that doesn't look so bad. I guess I can take the bike after all."

BIG MISTAKE. I was in a hurry, so I didn't even have time to go back and fetch a thicker coat by the time I realized how freaking cold it was. When I finally made it back home, my lungs were hurting. It took forever for my breath to stop wheezing and rasping even when I was just lying down in my warm bed. I was kinda worried there for a while, that's never happened to me before, but it seems to have passed now.

The next Dutch person who asks me: "Oh, you're from Finland? Isn't it cold there?" is going to receive a fist in the face. :|

Awww sorry to hear that! I was also hesitating to take the bike but the roads around my house hadn't been cleaned yet, so I went for the bus instead.

I was aware that they predicted a strong wind that would make everything colder, so I wore my thickest jacket, sweaters underneath, long socks, high boots.... but that bit of my jeans that was still exposed, I swear to god it felt as if I had been wearing a skirt and my legs were bare LOL!

I believe it was pretty cold last year, too. How did that feel for you?

I think this year has been colder, I had never experienced temps of -10 and below before, until this year.

I think the worst we had last year was -7 or -8?

(Still love Holland though! But I bitch about the weather like a good Dutchie does! ;D )
