Today we’ll be going from this:
To this:
This:
Or this:
It is primarily to be done in Photoshop Elements 4.0, but it pretty much translates into any other program. So then, let’s get started~
The first thing we do is duplicate the base so that we have two pictures to work with. Then, Saturate the FIRST base to make it black and white. On the right side of the screen, just above where your base is displayed, there should be a small button with a circle on it and half of it is white and the other half is black. Click there and you should get a menu. Select Hue/Saturation from said menu. Set it up like this:
Click okay, and voila; the image is black and white! Now, flatten your image (right click on the layer, Flatten Image).
It should now look like this:
Remember the SECOND image duplicate from before? Yeah? Good. Take the Saturated image (black and white, first image, whatever you want to call it) and copy it, then go over to work with the SECOND image.
Paste the Saturated image on top of the SECOND image. It should look something like this:
DO NOT FLATTEN THE IMAGE. The Layer names might be different, of course, so don’t worry about it. Now, time to actually make her dress red.
Click on the Fit Screen button on top of the page to make the image enlarge to its full size. Now, click on the eraser tool on the left side of the page and make sure you have the normal eraser tool selected, on 5px.
It should look something like this:
Carefully erase the part of her dress that is in the Saturated layer. You should start to see that the color starts to be noticeable from image on the bottom layer.
When erasing the straps of her dress, make sure you set your eraser tool to 1px, 5px is too big and would also erase the skin and we don’t want that.
Your image should now look like this:
You could leave it like that if you want, and add a border and voila, you would be done. But! I decided that I was going to add lipstick.
Click on the Fit Screen button again, and set your eraser tool on 2px. Now, hopefully you didn’t flatten your image. With the 2px eraser tool, carefully erase the lips on the Saturated image. You should see the color show. In my opinion, it’s too plain and not red enough.
So look over to the lower left side of the program and click on the Burn Tool. Set the burn tool on 2px, and carefully run the tool over her lips until it is a nice shade of dark red (almost like her dress).
Click on the Actual Pixels button to see your image:
You should now have a pretty nice/simple icon, and all you’d need to add would be a border and you’re done~ I prefer textless icons, but just for the tutorial, let’s add some text on there.
I’m going to add the word Sensual, in font Dyspepsia (size depends on how you big or small you want it).
Leave the text set to Normal and position it where you want it (in this case, on the bottom). It’s kind of hard to see, so we’re going to outline it.
We’re going to Outline it in red, so click on the Eyedropper Tool and get the same color of red that is used on her dress (b11d2b). Make sure you have the Text Layer selected, then go to Edit and choose Stroke (Outline) Selection from the drop down menu.
Set it like so:
Click OK. The text should now be outlined and more readable. However, that text is all in your face when you look at the icon. Leave it at Normal, but set the Opacity at 50%
Flatten the image now. You should have something like this:
Add a custom border or a simple black border and voila, you’re done! Pretty simple, no?
Hopefully you were able to follow through all that, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask~
