Doctors from a London University have published a case report on a man believed to have consumed the largest amount of MDMA ever recorded by a human being. Consultants at St George’s Medical School have been working with the 37 year old who is believed to have consumed roughly 40,000 pills over a nine-year period.

Although the man has been clean of the drug for the last 7 years he still suffers from severe mental and physical side-effects, including extreme memory problems (particularly with his short term memory), paranoia, hallucinations and depression. He also suffers from painful muscle rigidity in his neck and jaw, which sometimes prevent him from being able to open his mouth. Doctors believe that this is all permanent and irreversible damage done by the drug.

The man referred to as ‘MR A’ started taking the drug at age 21, going from an average of 5 pills a weekend, to 3 and a 1/2 pills a day, before reaching a peak of an estimated 25 pills a day for four years! It was only after a few severe collapses at parties that he decided to put a stop to his addiction and for several months he still felt under the influence of the drug, despite being bed-ridden.

After experiencing tunnel vision and other side effects that stopped him from functioning in day to day life he was referred to a consultant at St George’s Medical School, who treated him for five-months before conducting the strenuous tests.

British statistics show a drop in the number of ecstasy related deaths, but still show Brits are fond of their Es, as they remain by far the leading consumers of the drug in Europe and the second largest worldwide (after Australia).
