Summary: so it turns out that Sam has a Guardian angel he always thought was just Dean's
Sam knows he’s spinning out of control. He knows the walls in crashing down completely, that he’s barely hanging onto the last threads of sanity, where Lucifer taunts him every day and every hour and to the point where Sam is scared to sleep…
“That’s number ten today, Sam. You’re going to get yourself killed because you’re so damn tired. Sleep damnit.” Dean growled as he pulled the coffee away from Sam, who glared as best as he could, but it was nothing compared to Dean’s ‘I’m gonna kick my little brother’s ass if its the last thing I gotta do’ look.Sam grumbled and got into the passenger seat as Dean joined him and took him back to the hotel, where Lucifer was sitting on the bed, smirking. He’d known it was coming… That Sam had to sleep eventually, so he’d waited.
Sam passed out the minute his head touched the pillow, and as he expected, Lucifer swooped in for his prize, to cause more torment when- When there was the grumble of someone’s voice and a flash of burning white light in his dream, or the battlefield of his mind.
When it dimmed, Castiel was standing there, trenchcoat and everything, looking the way he should.
“Your mind is a very odd place these day, Sam. I was afraid I would not be able to get to you…” Castiel said softly, but Sam wasnt listening, he full on tackled the angel. He took in how solid he was, even for a dream version of him…and how he wrapped his arms around Sam, finally able to get that hug he’d wanted.
When Sam woke it was apparently a day and a half later, and when he woke, it wasnt Lucifer sitting there taunting him, it was Castiel. Castiel who Sam knows is dead, but yet the angel was still managing to save them…
That is, until Dean came inside with Cas, and sam went cold, because he knew immediately, this is not the Cas he remembered.
“Give it time,” Hallucination Cas whispered, “I’m still in there or I wouldnt be here helping you in your mind…I dont even realize I’m doing it, consciously, anyhow…” Sam looked to his Cas, his hallucination guardian, and saw Dean frown.
“Lucifer bugging you again?” Dean asked as cas, the Cas he brought in, got a confused look.
“No, Dean…I just…have another angel perched on my shoulder watching us.” He glances to Cas then to Dean, and Dean seems to understand cause he smiles a little.
“Well, better than Lucifer, right?”
“Right.”
