Vacation to Hilton Head, South Carolina

Jul 22, 2004 11:59

Monday night I got back from South Carolina, and the last couple of days we've been unpacking and cleaning.  So now I have free time so I'm going to write about my trip.

Saturday: left for Hilton Head.  the car ride was really long and we got stuck in traffic and a lot of rain.  we stopped at the border between North Carolina and South Carolina and slept in a hotel.

Sunday: finished trip down and finally got to Hilton Head.  We stayed in a condo in a little neighborhood called St. Andrew's Common.  it was a pretty nice sized condo- a full kitchen; full dining room; small room with a table and 4 chairs; a living room with tv,VCR/DVD player, and cd player; two bedrooms and two bathrooms.  i went to my first Piggly Wiggly (i have wanted to go to one of those for forever and i finally did and i was excited about it, but its nothing special once you get inside... but whatever i enjoyed myself in that store.).  visited the beach at night for a little and saw the sun set.

Monday: had first trip to the beach.  its really different from what im use to in Ocean City, but it wasnt bad.  the water was so freakin warm though, it was like bath water, and it was gross because someone could pee in it and you wouldnt even know it (ewwwww).  then later that night we rode around on parts of the island we didnt see yet.

Tuesday: went to the beach later in the afternoon and found out that the water comes in really far up the beach when the tides are changing so we searched the island for a Target, Wal-mart, etc., and finally found a Wal-mart and bought beach chairs.

Wednesday: rented canoes a rode around the marshes/rivers.  i was in one with my brothers and we kept running into things and it was scary cuz i thought the canoe would tip over but then it was funny after we ran into more things. :P  you kind of had to be there to understand it.  then we went to the beach, played mini golf, went swimming in the pool they have for the neighborhood to use, and planned a trip to Georgia for the next day.

Thursday: went to Savannah, Georgia for the day, which was only an hour away from the island.  it was a nice day but then it started to rain.  we went to this museum thing and then went on a ferry ride but the boat looked like an old fashoined river boat.  it was cool.  and then we went to this old fort and in the moat around the fort they had alligators in it and it was scary because they weren't in cages and were right there and i was afraid they would come and eat me :O.

Friday: in the morning we walked up to a general store where you can buy souvenirs and snacks (but the place smelled really bad because they sell live bait but then they also sell hot food like grocery stores do, so the two smells clashed together and made this horrible stench.  it was gross, but i slowly got use to it and tried to ignore it at the same time).  then we went to the beach and started packing some of our stuff to leave (which was sad because i really liked it down there :(  ).

Saturday: my dad, my brother, and me rented bikes from the same place we rented the canoes and we rode around the island for like an hour and a half.  then we went to play mini golf and this cool pirate course and we ended up playing two games (one was on an easier level and the other one was "advanced").  then we went to Harbortown which is like the Inner Harbor here.  we went in a lighthouse they have there, ate dinner, and then went shopping. then it started to rain so we decided to go home (that was the only day it rained in South Carolina while we were down there).  but we decided to stop at a CVS and pick up some candy for the ride back home and as we were driving we saw this amazing sun set so we went to a park they have there and pulled into a parking lot and took pictures of it.  then we went back to our place and packed to leave.

Sunday: we left Hilton Head, and got to our hotel stop really early so we went out to an early dinner and then played card games in the hotel room

Monday: we finished our trip home, but on the way my dad thought it would be "fun" to go to this one town, Halifax (i think its in North Carolina), where they have this colonial city that got passed by the railroad tracks and the town stayed "preserved" in its colonial form or something like that i have no idea.  but it was extremely hot like all the other days were when we were there so it was hot and kinda boring and we just wanted to go home and it was just awful.  and as we were driving through the town all you saw were beat up trailers and junk in what would be their yards and it was creepy cuz i was afraid some crazy person would like jump out and start shooting at something or someone.  i just wanted to get out of there.  then we finally got back home and it was nice being home because when im away i miss just sitting on our sofa and sleeping in my own bed.

it was really pretty down in the South, and really humid and hot but you got use to it after awhile.  and they have palmetto trees which are different from palm trees cuz instead of growing fruit they grow these bush like things.  and if you think that people in Maryland and Virginia have really strong/funny accents, think again- it is NOTHING compared to what you here in the "deep South".  and it was nice having a DVD player in the car for the long rides.

TOTAL MOVIES WATCHED: 8 (4 on the way there and 4 on the way home)

and then on Tuesday i got my stupid retainer.  yuck.  but ill wear it- i want my teeth to stay straight.

i just realized what time it is- and im hungry so im going to go eat some lunch now.  toodles! :D
